The Differences Between Cold Sore and Canker Sore
Cold sores and canker sores are common disorders of the mouth. They are often confused with each other. Every year, a lot of people in the world get it. Although they have some similar things in symptoms, they are different conditions. While one of them is highly contagious and difficult to treat, the other is not serious and can be treated by itself.

How can identify canker sores and cold sores?

Canker sores are a common disorder that cause the painful sores inside the mouth. They are white ovals, small, shallow ulcers in the mouth and they can develop on tongue, inside lips, or cheeks. A canker sore is a small oval (about 2-4mm in size) to round ulcer with a red border. It often makes people difficult in eating and drinking but do not contagious. There are two types of canker sores:
– Simple canker sores. They can appear three or four times in a year and last to a week. They often occur in the age from 10 to 20.
– Complex canker sores. They often occur in people who had them before. They last longer than simple canker sores.
Cold sores, with medical term is oral herpes, are highly contagious and usually appear outside the mouth. They are red blisters on the lips, cheeks or in nostrils. Cold sores are generally not dangerous to health problem, they can cause serious problems if do not cure. With cold sore, it can last 7-14 days to heal completely.

What cause canker sores and cold sores?

Canker sores and cold sore have the similar appearances, but the causes are different from each other. Canker sores can be caused by a lot of reasons. They occur when you are getting enough rest or taking care of yourself and several things:
Lack of nutrition. Nutrition is vital for body development. Lacking of one of these nutrition such as vitamin B12, Zinc, iron or folic acid can develop canker sores. It’s because these nutrition contribute the metabolism in the body that can prevent canker sores. Besides, you can get canker sores when eating too much food that contain fatty food, alcohol or dried food.
More stressful. When you are under pressure in your job or other stressful times in your life, they can be a reason of canker sores. So the way you can prevent them is to control and manage your stressful.
Hormonal changes. You are more likely to get canker sores when your body have changes in hormone. It means that when you take medicine, your body also have a large changes in hormone.  And they are common reason that lead to canker sores.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Toothpaste will contain the amount of SLS. This ingredient can give foaming and tingly feeling. But it is strongly connected with canker sores because it can stimulate tissues inside of the mouth and lead to canker sores.
Food allergies. Some people have canker sores because of food allergies. When their body are allergic with something, these substance can cause allergies in the body that also causes canker sores.
Unlike canker sores, cold sore can be caused by virus Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV 1). This virus can be transmitted by skin to skin contact when sharing cups or personal items.  Kissing, touching the blister and having bad sexual life are also the reasons of cold sore. 
Unluckily, this virus never goes away once you have it, it will remain in your body during life. Although some of patient without noticeable symptoms, it can still be spread. Beside, outbreaks can be come back by some of these reasons such as exposure to the sun, hormonal changes, stressful and fatigue. After outbreak has passed, the virus retreat back in to the cells and waiting to strike again. For cold sore without symptoms, it is difficult to treat effectively.

How to treat canker sores and cold sores?

Canker sores can be heal completely in one or two week without treatment, but it can be cured immediately with dental lasers. In cases of not using dental lasers, you can use salt water. It help you to reduce the amount of inflammation of the area. It’s because salt water can increase blood flow to the hurts and decrease the treatment time.
Besides, you can use some treatment with natural ingredients such as coconut oil, clove oil, or chamomile tea bag to cure:
Coconut oil. There is no doubt when using coconut oil to treat canker sores because of Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and also incredibly tasty. These substance can defeat canker sores by applying a thick layer coconut oil to the hurt.
Chamomile tea bag. Chamomile can reduce the inflammation and soothe the pain in the area. That’s because it contains daisy- like plants that are most commonly used to reduce stress and increase nice sleep.
Clove oil or other oil with high quality also get rid of canker sores.
Although there is some treatments for canker sores, you can control or prevent them by other ways:
Avoiding food that stimulate your hurts in mouth, including citrus fruits, acidic vegetables, spicy or hot foods. It’s also recommended to avoid alcohol, tomato sauce, chips, coffee or wine.
Avoiding stressful. When having stress or tired, it is necessary for having a rest to balance everything in your minds. This ways can help you prevent canker sores.
Using warm salt water to keep your teeth clean and prevent canker sores.
Eating a lot of foods with nutrition, especially vitamin B, C and iron acid folic and other nutrition that makes the body has more energy to defeat the virus.
Cold sores will heal by themselves in about 2-3 weeks. When getting it, you can use some tips to treat it:

Cold sores and canker sores are confused disorders that make people difficult in eating, drinking and feel tired too. So people should maintain good habit to avoid stress and have good diet to create more energy for body that prevent cold sores and canker sores as well.
